Facebook cover photo size in 2026
Facebook shows a profile cover at 820 × 312 pixels on desktop and 640 × 360 pixels on phones. The same file is used for both, so the phone crops the sides and the desktop crops the top and bottom. Anything you care about (faces, text, a logo) should sit in the middle 640 × 312 area, which is the part visible everywhere.

How to make a cover photo that looks right everywhere
- Start wide. Export your design at 1640 × 624 px (exactly twice 820 × 312). Facebook downsizes it for desktop and it stays crisp on Retina and 4K screens.
- Keep the middle clean. Put text, faces and logos inside the central 640 × 312 area. The outer 90 px on each side vanish on phones; the top and bottom 24 px vanish on desktop.
- Mind the profile picture. On desktop the round profile photo overlaps the bottom-left of the cover; on phones it sits centred below it. Avoid important details in the bottom-left corner.
- Save as JPG at 80–90 % quality for photos, or PNG for flat graphics with text. Facebook re-compresses either way; a file under 100 KB with sRGB colour uploads cleanest.
- Check both devices with the tool above before uploading. It shows the exact crop Facebook applies.
Why your cover photo looks blurry or cut off
Blurry: the upload was smaller than 820 px wide, or it was a PNG with a photo in it (Facebook converts large PNGs aggressively). Re-export at 1640 × 624 as a JPG.
Cut off: the image was not 2.63:1. Facebook lets you drag to reposition, but it will never show more than 820 × 312 worth of the picture on desktop. Crop it yourself first so nothing is left to chance.
