What these symbols are and where they work
Everything on this page is a Unicode text character, the same kind of thing as a letter or a full stop. That is different from Facebook's own reactions and stickers, which are images. Because they are text, you can paste them into posts, comments, replies, captions, your bio, the nickname field, group and page names, event titles, Marketplace listings and Messenger. Facebook stores them unchanged and shows them to everyone using whatever font their device has.
The one place they do not work is the profile name. Facebook's name standards require letters from a real alphabet and explicitly forbid symbols and punctuation, so ★ or ♛ in a name is rejected. Put decorations in your nickname or bio instead; the stylish name page explains what is allowed where.
How to use symbols on Facebook
- Click a symbol above. It is copied to your clipboard immediately and added to the combination box.
- Build a line if you want one. Click several symbols in a row, for example ═══ ★ ═══, then press Copy all. Dividers are handy for separating sections of a long post, because Facebook strips blank lines beyond one.
- Paste on Facebook. Long-press and choose Paste on a phone, or press Ctrl+V / ⌘V on a computer. You can paste in the middle of a sentence, at the start of every list item, or around a name.
You can also type many symbols directly. On Windows, hold Alt and type a code on the numeric keypad (Alt+3 gives ♥, Alt+14 gives ♫), or open the emoji panel with Win+. and switch to the Symbols tab. On a Mac, press Ctrl+⌘+Space for the Character Viewer. On phones, the emoji keyboard has a symbols page, and long-pressing letters and punctuation reveals extra characters. This page is simply faster when you want several at once.
Symbols vs. emoji
Hearts are a good example of the difference. ♥ and ❤ are classic text symbols: small, single-colour, drawn in the font of the text around them, and they look the same on every device. ❤️ (the same heart followed by an invisible “emoji presentation” character) and 💖 are emoji: Facebook replaces them with its own full-colour pictures. Both kinds work in posts; use text symbols when you want something subtle or want to build borders, and emoji when you want colour. The emoji page has the full colour set, including all seven reactions.
A handful of symbols sit in between: ☀ ☁ ☂ ✈ ✂ ☎ ✉ and the chess pieces may show as flat glyphs in one app and as colour pictures in another, depending on whether the platform treats them as emoji by default. Nothing is wrong with your post when that happens.
Limitations
- Old devices show boxes. Common symbols (hearts, stars, arrows, music notes, chess pieces, box-drawing lines) have been in fonts since the 1990s and render everywhere. Rarer ones, such as Egyptian hieroglyphs, Balinese ꧁꧂ wings or the newer geometric shapes, need a modern font and can appear as ▯ on old Android phones and smart TVs.
- Screen readers announce many symbols by their Unicode name (“black star”, “heavy heart exclamation”), which is tolerable for one or two and exhausting for a 20-symbol divider. Keep decorative lines short.
- Search ignores them. A group called ★彡 Travel 彡★ is still found by searching “Travel”, but nobody can search for the stars.
- Kaomoji use spaces and brackets. Facebook keeps them intact, but long ones wrap onto two lines on narrow screens, and a kaomoji pasted directly after a link can have its brackets absorbed into the link. Leave a space between them.
- Spam filters do not care about symbols themselves, but a comment that is nothing but a wall of ★★★ posted repeatedly will be rate-limited like any other repeated content.
