What the Facebook bio is and where it shows
The bio is the short line of text under your name on your profile. It is separate from the “Details” list (work, school, hometown, relationship), from the older “About” description and from the Featured section. It is limited to 101 characters, it is always public, and it is the first thing a stranger reads after your name, whether they find you in search, in a group or in a comment thread. Facebook shows it in the Intro card on desktop and directly under the profile picture in the app.
Because it is public and short, a good bio does one job: it tells people who you are in a sentence they will remember. That can be a real description (“Nurse, mum of two, Liverpool”), a mood (“Not a morning person”) or a joke; the 225 bios below cover all three. Page bios work the same way but sit in the Page's Intro card, and a business page should say what it sells and how to contact it rather than being cute.
How to change your Facebook bio
In the app (Android / iPhone)
- Tap your profile picture, then Edit profile.
- Scroll to Bio and tap Add bio or Edit.
- Paste the bio you copied above and tap Save.
On desktop
- Open your profile and click Edit profile (or Edit bio in the Intro card).
- Type or paste the text in the Bio box; the counter shows how much room is left.
- Click Save. The change is visible immediately and does not create a post.
You can change the bio as often as you like; there is no 60-day rule like there is for names. To remove it, open the same box, delete the text and save.
Limits and things that count against them
- 101 characters, including spaces and punctuation. The composer above counts each Unicode character once and turns red when you are over; Facebook's own box may differ by a character or two on complex emoji, so leave a little room.
- Fancy fonts from the drop-down count as one character per letter, the same as normal text. Underline, strikethrough and glitch styles add an invisible combining mark after every letter, so they use two or three characters per letter; a 50-character sentence will not fit underlined.
- Emoji count as one each, but flags, skin-tone variants and combined emoji like 👨👩👧 are built from several characters and can count as two to seven characters.
- Line breaks are allowed, but the bio is displayed as a compact block under your name, so one or two lines read best.
- Links are not clickable in the bio. Put a URL in the “Websites” field under Details instead, or in the Intro of a Page.
- Hashtags and @mentions are plain text in the bio; they neither link nor notify anyone.
- Screen readers read fancy fonts letter by letter or skip them, so if you use one, keep it to a word or two and leave the rest in normal text.
