The 7 Facebook reactions and what they mean
Reactions are the buttons under a post, not characters you type. Hover over Like on desktop or press and hold it in the app to see all seven. The pictures below are the closest standard emoji; Facebook draws its own animated versions.
The default. “I saw this and I approve.” Neutral enough for anything from a news story to a baby photo.
Stronger than Like: congratulations, good news, people you care about. The most used reaction after Like.
A face hugging a heart, added in 2020. “Thinking of you” when someone is ill, grieving or going through something hard.
It made you laugh. Also used sarcastically, so read the room before using it on a serious post.
Surprise or admiration: an achievement, a dramatic photo, unexpected news.
Sympathy for bad news. Together with Care it is the polite reaction to a loss.
Outrage at the content, not usually at the poster. Common under political and injustice posts.
There is still no Dislike button. Reactions can be changed by tapping again, are visible to everyone who can see the post, and the poster can see exactly who reacted with what. On comments the same seven are available; in Messenger you can react to a message with any emoji from the keyboard.
Emoticon shortcodes Facebook converts automatically
Long before emoji keyboards, Facebook turned typed emoticons into little pictures, and most of the classic codes still work in comments and Messenger today: type the characters and they turn into the emoji as you post. Codes marked legacy belonged to the old sticker-style set and are no longer converted in current apps.

How to use emoji on Facebook
- From this page: click an emoji, then paste it into a post, comment, bio, Story text, Marketplace listing or Messenger chat. Emoji are plain Unicode text, so they work anywhere text does, including group names, event titles and Page names. They are not allowed in your profile name.
- From Facebook itself: the smiley icon in the post box and the comment field opens Facebook's picker, with a search field and a recently-used row.
- From your keyboard: on Windows press Win+., on a Mac Ctrl+⌘+Space, and on phones the smiley key on the keyboard. Typing the shortcodes above is often quicker in comments.
Facebook replaces every emoji with its own artwork, so the same 😂 looks slightly different on facebook.com than on your phone's home screen, and it always looks the same to your friends regardless of their device. That is unlike fancy Unicode fonts, which depend on the reader's font. It also means brand-new emoji added to Unicode each September usually take several months to appear on Facebook; until then they show as an empty box.
Skin tones, combined emoji and limits
- Skin tones. Hands and people come in the default yellow plus five tones, based on the Fitzpatrick scale. Use the tone selector in the “Hands & people” section above, or long-press the emoji in any keyboard. Facebook's own picker lets you set a default tone once in its settings.
- Combined emoji. Families, couples, professions, flags and the tone variants are several characters joined together (👨👩👧 is five). They count as multiple characters against the 101-character bio limit, and if a device does not understand the combination it shows the parts side by side rather than a box.
- Post and comment limits. A post can hold 63,206 characters and a comment 8,000, so emoji never run out of room there. The bio (101) and the nickname field are where they add up quickly.
- Reach. Emoji do not hurt or help ranking by themselves. Comments made of nothing but 20 identical emoji can be filtered as spam, and a wall of emoji is unreadable for screen readers, which announce each one by name.
- Search. Facebook search ignores emoji, and hashtags cannot contain them: #🔥 is not a hashtag.
