Messenger Chat Themes
Change the look of any Messenger conversation and match it with a full Facebook theme.
These are Facebook's themes, not ours
The themes on this page belong to Messenger itself. You set them inside a conversation, they apply to that one chat, and both people see the change. No extension is involved, and none can add themes to this list.
Our extension does something different: it restyles Facebook — the feed, profiles, groups, Marketplace — with a photo or video background and matching colours. It deliberately leaves Messenger alone, both the full facebook.com/messages page and the chat windows, so your conversations keep Facebook's own colours and stay readable. That is why a theme you install here does not show up in your private messages.
What a Messenger theme changes
A Messenger theme recolours one conversation: the bubbles of your own messages, the accent used for the send button, links, the typing indicator and the header, and in the gradient themes the whole background behind the chat. The other person's bubbles stay grey so the two sides remain easy to tell apart. Themes are shared, not private: whoever changes the theme changes it for everyone in the chat, which is why the app posts a small notice when it happens. There is no “apply to all chats” option; the only global appearance setting in Messenger is dark mode.
Change a chat theme on your phone
Open the conversation in Messenger
Any one-to-one chat or group. The theme is set per conversation, so open the one you want to change.
Tap the name (or avatars) at the top
This opens the chat details screen with the call buttons, media, nicknames and customisation options.
Tap “Theme”
Under Customisation. A grid of themes appears with a live preview of the bubbles above it.
Pick a theme, then tap Apply
Both sides of the conversation see the new look at once, and a small “You changed the theme to …” line is added to the chat.
Same path on Android and iPhone. In Instagram-linked chats and in the Facebook app's built-in inbox the option is also under the chat name.
Change a theme on desktop or the web
Open the chat on messenger.com, facebook.com or the desktop app
Themes sync, so anything you set here shows on your phone too.
Click the conversation details button (the circled i)

That section also holds the quick reaction, nicknames and the chat colour. The theme grid is the same one the phone shows.
The Messenger themes available in 2026
Meta rotates this set, so the picker in your own app is the only accurate list: it differs by region, by app version and over time, and limited-time themes tied to holidays or film releases appear and then disappear (a chat that already uses one keeps it). What you can rely on is the shape of the list: Default first, then a run of solid colours and gradients, and Custom at the end for your own one- or two-colour gradient. The swatches below are examples of the gradient styles you will find, not a catalogue of names.
Beyond the presets, Custom at the end of the grid opens a colour wheel: pick a single accent colour, or two colours for a gradient, and the bubbles, header and send button follow. Custom colours are the way to match a brand or a partner's favourite colour when no preset fits.
Emoji, nicknames and dark mode
The same chat details screen holds the other per-conversation options. Quick reaction (or “Emoji”) replaces the thumbs-up next to the message box with any emoji, and the app suggests one that fits the theme, for example a heart for Love or a rocket for Rocket. Nicknames rename people inside that chat only. Word effects attach an emoji animation to a word you choose.
Dark mode is separate and global: tap your profile picture in the top-left of Messenger, choose Dark mode, then On, Off or System. Dark mode changes the background and the grey bubbles; the theme keeps colouring your own bubbles, so the two combine. A theme is missing, or you want the old look back
The Theme option is not there. Update Messenger; theme customisation needs a recent version, and business chats and some encrypted-only conversations offer a smaller set. Themes arrive in stages by region, so a friend abroad may see one you do not. Chats you open inside the Facebook app rather than Messenger sometimes show the option only after you tap “Open in Messenger”.
A themed chat looks wrong in dark mode. Some gradients were designed for light backgrounds. Pick a darker preset from the grid, or use Custom and choose a dark colour yourself.
To reset, open Theme again and choose Default, the first tile. Everyone in the chat goes back to the standard blue gradient bubbles. Deleting the conversation does not reset the theme; the other side keeps it.
Match it with a full Facebook theme
A Messenger theme stops at the edge of the chat. Facebook itself keeps its own look, and our free Chrome extension Themes for Facebook is what changes that: photo and video backgrounds, matching colours and fonts across the feed, profiles and groups. It deliberately leaves your chats alone, so the two do not fight. Pick a mood on both sides and they meet in the middle:
- A pink or red chat gradient with a Love theme on Facebook.
- A purple or blue gradient with a Space background.
- A pastel gradient with an Anime theme.
- A green or teal gradient with a Nature or Flowers background.
- A plain grey or black chat with a Black or Abstract theme.
